KIJA KWON : Inside out

권기자의 작업은 물감과 오일을 캔버스 위에 흘리고 튀기며 예상치 못한 형태를 창출하는 독창적인 기법으로 시작된다. 이 과정에서 여러 겹의 물감이 축적되다가 굳어지면, 그 물감을 다시 떼어내어 조형적으로 변형시키며 시간의 지속과 변화를 시각적으로 구현한다. 이러한 즉흥적이고 자유로운 기법은 물감이 자연스럽게 흘러내리거나 튀기면서 발생하는 우연의 결과를 담아내며, 이는 작가의 의도와 같은 물리적 변수의 결합으로 완성된 예술적 산물이다. 이러한 과정은 감정과 기억이 축적되고 변형되는 방식을 비유적으로 드러낸다.

Kija Kwon's work begins with an innovative technique, pouring and splashing paint and oil onto the canvas to create unpredictable forms. As multiple layers of paint accumulate and harden, she peels them away, transforming the material into sculptural elements that visually represent the passage and evolution of time. This spontaneous and free-flowing method captures the results of chance as the paint flows and splatters, merging the artist's intent with physical variables to produce a work that is the outcome of both intention and serendipity. Through this process, Kwon metaphorically reveals how emotions and memories accumulate and transform over time.

In her works, color transcends its purely visual function, becoming a vehicle for emotional projection. Each hue is perceived differently, depending on the viewer’s personal experiences, and is imbued with layered emotions and energy. When multiple layers of paint coalesce into a single color, it reflects the complex depths of emotions and memories, hinting at the latent meanings within.

Kwon’s exploration is particularly focused on the accumulation of time and its resulting transformations. As paint flows and solidifies, the traces of time are etched into the work, embodying the forces of nature and time as they permeate the piece, reconfiguring emotions and memories in the process.
