작가노트

삶의 절반을 넘어가면서 자연스럽게 잠기게 되는 생각들을 카빙으로 표현하게 되었다. 수염이 하얘지고 작은 글씨가 아득해지기 시작하니 여지껏 의식하지 않았던 몸의 불투명성을 문득 자각하게 되었다. 그리고 무한하게 펼쳐 진 것만 같았던 삶은 더 나아갈 수 없는 테두리가 이제야 보이는, 하나의 섬으로 느껴 지게 되었다. 하나의 섬, 하나의 주어진 덩어리 - carving을 시작할 때마다 내 앞에 놓여지는 나무토막과 돌멩이처럼.

누구나처럼 어수선하고 평범한 삶을 나는 살아가고 있다. 생(生 )하던 것은 다시 쇠(衰)하게 된다는 것, 그 자리에 있음이란 오직 그 때 뿐이라는 것이 삶의 중턱을 넘어가는 지금 나의 머리 속을 휘젓는 생각들이다. (이렇게 말하고는 있지만 나는 꽤나 지나간 것들에 연연하는 사람이다.) 내 주변의 여러 사소한 물건들이 그러한 생각들을 일으키고 나는 그것들을 보고 깎는다. 보이는 것을 보이는 대로 따라 깎는 것 외엔 달리 덧붙일 것이 없었다. 그러나 나에게는 그저 보임이 아니라 저들의 생김새에 대해 생각하는 시간들이었다.

나무가 그러한 물건처럼 보이기까지 긴 시간을 함께하는 동안 나는 또각거리는 망치 소리와 뒤덮이는 끝의 궤적에 푹 빠져드는 데서 작업의 의의를 가졌다. 그러한 잡다한 물건들이 나무의 촉감을 통해 재현되는 동안 나는 표현될 수 있는 것과 표현할 수 없는 것을 점차 분간해 갈 수 있었다.

As I passed the halfway point of life, my thoughts naturally turned to carving as a means of expression. As my beard whitened and small letters began to blur, I suddenly became aware of the opacity of my body, which I had not consciously considered until now. And the life that seemed to stretch infinitely now appears as a boundary, as a single island. A single island, a given chunk - like the pieces of wood and stones that lay before me each time I begin carving.

I, like everyone else, live an ordinary and messy life. That things born (生) will eventually wither (衰), and that the present moment is the only time, are thoughts that occupy my mind beyond the midlife crisis. (I say this, but I'm quite sentimental about things from the past.) Many small objects in my surroundings evoke such thoughts, and I carve them as I see them. There was nothing to add beyond carving what I saw. But for me, it was not just about seeing; it was also about the time I spent thinking about their appearance.

During the long time it took for the wood to resemble such objects, I found meaning in the clinking sound of the hammer and the deep grooves of the tracks being covered, as I lost myself in the work. As these miscellaneous objects were reproduced through the texture of wood, I gradually learned to distinguish between what could be expressed and what could not.
