이광호 작가는 극사실주의 기법을 바탕으로 자연의 디테일을 섬세하게 묘사하면서, 밀랍을 사용해 물감을 흐리게 칠하는 독특한 기법을 사용한다. 이로 인해 그의 작품은 깊이감과 질감을 가지며, 자연 속에서 발견한 소재들이 새롭게 표현된다. 특히 그는 ‘매너’를 중요하게 생각하는데, 이는 단순한 기술이 아니라, 작가 자신의 독창적 화풍과 시각적 해석을 통해 작품에 고유한 정체성을 부여하는 것이다.
그는 물질의 물성을 탐구하며, 자연과 인간 사이의 상호작용을 붓질을 통해 표현하고자 한다. 작품에서의 붓질은 때로는 극도로 세밀하고, 때로는 즉흥적이지만, 그 모든 과정에서 작가가 중요하게 여기는 것은 시각적 경험을 통해 관객과 감정적, 촉각적 교감을 이루는 것이다. 이광호의 작업은 자연과 대상을 단순히 재현하는 것에서 그치지 않고, 그 속에 담긴 생명의 에너지를 표현하며, 캔버스의 표면을 실험적으로 다루면서 감각적인 예술적 탐구를 시도한다.

이광호는 전통적 회화 기법들을 답습하되 이를 현대적으로 재해석하여 ‘회화적 재현’이 아닌 ‘회화적 시선의 재현’을 탐구하고 그만의 시각 언어를 일구어 왔다. 그는 1994년 서울대학교 미술대학 서양화과, 1999년 동 대학원 서양화과를 졸업하였고, 현재 이화여자대학교 조형예술대학에 재직중이다. 주요 개인전으로는 국제갤러리 《그림 풍경》(2014), 조현화랑 《이광호》(2018)가 있으며, 그 외에 부산시립미술관 《보태니카》(2018), 뮤지엄 산 《자연, 그 안에 있다》(2016), 국립현대미술관 서울 《환영과 환상》(2015), 경남도립미술관 《리얼리티, 재현과 자율 사이》(2013), 런던의 사치 갤러리 《코리안 아이》(2012), 하이트컬렉션 《한국의 그림-매너에 관하여》(2012), 서울시립미술관 《극사실화-눈을 속이다》(2011), 국립현대미술관 덕수궁 《추상하라!》(2011), 프라하 비엔날레(2009) 등 국내외 다수의 그룹전에도 참여했다. 이광호의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 리움미술관, 서울시립미술관, 경기도미술관, 수원시립미술관, 제주도립미술관, 항저우 바이아트매터스를 포함한 유수의 기관들에 소장되어 있다.
Lee Kwangho (b. 1967) is a hyperrealist painter renowned for his meticulous depictions of nature, using techniques like wax to create fluid, blurred paint textures. His work emphasizes depth and tactile qualities, often bridging the gap between abstraction and representation. Central to his practice is the concept of "manner," which he considers key to establishing his unique artistic identity.
Exploring the materiality of substances, Lee's brushstrokes vary from fine detail to spontaneous gestures. His work moves beyond mere representation, conveying the energy and life of natural subjects, while continuously experimenting with canvas surfaces and paint absorption. By combining intention with chance, his paintings present a visually and emotionally rich experience.
Lee's emphasis on “manner” goes beyond technical skill, reflecting his commitment to creating a visual language that fosters deep connections with viewers. His works challenge traditional boundaries between abstract and figurative painting, aiming to evoke sensory engagement.
Kwang-ho Lee has cultivated a unique visual language through the reexamination of traditional painting techniques, not by merely replicating "pictorial representation," but by delving into the "representation of a pictorial gaze." His approach is a modern reinterpretation of classical methods, allowing him to explore new perspectives within the visual arts. Lee graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Seoul National University in 1994 and earned his MFA from the same institution in 1999. He currently holds a faculty position at Ewha Womans University’s College of Art and Design.
Lee's notable solo exhibitions include Landscape in Painting at Kukje Gallery (2014) and Kwang-ho Lee at Johyun Gallery (2018). His participation in significant group exhibitions spans both domestic and international venues, including Botanica at the Busan Museum of Art (2018), In Nature at Museum SAN (2016), Illusion and Fantasy at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul (2015), Reality: Between Representation and Autonomy at Gyeongnam Art Museum (2013), Korean Eye at Saatchi Gallery, London (2012), On Manner: Korean Painting at HITE Collection (2012), Hyperrealism: Deceiving the Eye at Seoul Museum of Art (2011), Abstraction! at MMCA Deoksugung (2011), and the Prague Biennale (2009).
His works are held in prestigious collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Suwon Ipark Museum of Art, Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art, and Bai Art Matters in Hangzhou, among other distinguished institutions.
