권오상, 김기라, 이동욱, 최수앙 : 시각노래를 위한 접근들

이번 스텔라 갤러리에서 열리는 전시는 한국 동시대미술을 대표하는 네 명의 중견작가들 권오상, 김기라, 이동욱, 최수앙을 소개한다. 이들은 모두 2000년대 초에 미술계에 혜성같이 등장하여 지난 20여 년 간 국내외의 수많은 미술관과 비엔날레 등에서 이름을 알려온 원숙한 작가들이다. 40대 중반의 동 세대 작가들인 이들은 평면, 입체, 영상, 설치, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 매체들을 폭넓게 다루면서 자신들만의 독특한 조형언어를 탐색해 온 것으로도 잘 알려져 있다.  예컨대, 권오상은 평면사진을 입체조각과 접목시킴으로써 2D/3D 하이브리드 양식의 대표적인 예시를 보여줬으며, 김기라는 주제의식이 강한 개념적 퍼포먼스를 영상으로 보여주는 동시에 대중적 기호들을 자유롭게 혼합하여 복합적인 설치작업으로 다루는 등의 표현영역을 폭넓게 다루어 왔다. 이동욱은 매우 섬세하고도 디테일한 소형조각을 통해 현대사회의 아이러니칼한 삶의 양상들을 시적으로 표현해 왔으며, 최수앙은 극사실적인 신체의 표현으로부터 그러한 신체의 과감한 기하학적 혹은 수행적 변형에 이르기까지 극적인 실험을 거듭해나가고 있다.  다시 말해, 이들의 공통점은 매체와 표현양식을 광폭으로 가로지르는 실험성과 그에 못지않은 정교함, 조형적 완성도에 있다고 하겠다.  

<시각노래를 위한 접근들>은 이들의 작품세계가 동시대미술의 철학적, 사변적, 실험적 영역에만 머물지 않고 좀 더 아름답게 관객들의 감성과 공감대로 이어지는 모습을 떠올리게 한다. 미술은 미학적인 노력과 탐구의 영역인 동시에 삶의 의미와 감동을 드러내고 불러일으키는 활동이기도 하다. ‘시각노래’가 의미하는 바는 이들의 작품들이 각자의 마음 속에 선율과 화음, 그리고 내면 깊은 곳에서 우러나오는 진솔한 목소리를 담고 있다는 사실을 가리키는 것이다. 중년의 작가들이 들려주는 낮은 목소리의 이야기들이 시각적으로 치환되어 전시장에 흐르는 것이다. 그리고 이러한 각각의 선율들로 천천히 다가가는 것이야말로 작가가 연출하고자 하는 전시의 주조색, 분위기, 톤이라고도 할 수 있을 것이다. 

이번 전시에서는 네 작가들의 작품세계에 일어나고 있는 변화와 도약의 모습도 살펴볼 수 있을 것이다.  권오상은 작품을 바라보는 시점의 전혀 새로운 형태들을 모색함으로서 새로운 조각의 가능성을 추구하고 있으며, 김기라는 2차원 드로잉과 3차원의 네온사인으로 만든 입체조각을 조합하여 슈퍼히어로와 같은 대중적 기호들을 재해석해 보여준다. 이동욱은 암석, 금속, 나뭇가지 등과 조합된 평범하면서도 자세히 살펴보면 비범한 세부를 드러내는 작품들을 보여준다. 최수앙은 자신의 극사실조각에서 한발 더 나아가, 표현의 한계를 뛰어넘는 완전히 새로운 표현들을 제시하고 있다.  이로 인해 관객들은 이번 전시에서 이러한 시도와 실험들의 현장을 목도하는 즐거움을 누릴 수 있을 것이다.  아마도 이 작가들의 이전 작업들에 대해 잘 알고 있는 관객들일수록 더욱 감상의 즐거움이 배가되리라 생각한다.  관객들의 많은 관심과 관람이 이어지길 바란다.

Exhibition Featuring Four Renowned Artists 

< Approaches to Sight Singing>

In the upcoming exhibition at Stellar Gallery, we introduce four prominent mid-career artists who have played a significant role in representing contemporary Korean art: Gwon Osang, Kim Kira, Lee Dongwook, and Choi Xooang. Emerging like comets in the early 2000s, these seasoned artists have garnered recognition both domestically and internationally through exhibitions in numerous art museums and biennales over the past two decades. In their mid-40s, this generation of artists encompasses a broad range of mediums, including 2D/3D hybrid forms, sculpture, video, installation, and performance, showcasing their distinctive artistic languages.

For instance, Gwon Osang has seamlessly integrated flat photography with three-dimensional sculpture, exemplifying a representative case of 2D/3D hybrid form. Kim Kira delves into conceptually rich performances captured on video, intertwining popular symbols freely in her multifaceted installation works. Lee Dongwook intricately expresses ironic facets of contemporary life through delicate and detailed small sculptures, while Choi Xooang boldly experiments with the dramatic transformation of the human body, ranging from hyper-realistic depictions to geometric or performative alterations. In essence, their common ground lies in the experimental nature that spans across various media and forms, coupled with meticulous craftsmanship and sculptural completeness.

"Approaches to Sight Singing" aims to transcend the philosophical, revolutionary, and experimental realms of contemporary art into more aesthetically pleasing connections with the emotions and empathies of the audience. Art is not only a realm of aesthetic exploration and effort but also an activity that reveals and evokes the meaning and emotions of life. The term 'sight singing' signifies that their works encapsulate melodies, harmonies, and sincere voices emanating from the depths of their hearts. The stories told by these artists, in the form of quiet melodies, are visually transposed, flowing through the exhibition space. Approaching these individual melodies gradually is akin to appreciating the exhibition's dominant colors, atmosphere, and tone crafted by the artists.

This exhibition provides an opportunity to observe the transformations and leaps occurring in the artistic worlds of these four individuals. Gwon Osang is exploring new forms from the perspective of viewing artworks, seeking new possibilities in sculpture. Kim Kira reinterprets iconic symbols like superheroes by combining 2D drawings with 3D neon signs. Lee Dongwook presents works that, while appearing ordinary at first glance, reveal extraordinary details when examined closely, incorporating rocks, metals, and branches. Choi Xooang goes beyond the boundaries of his hyper-realistic sculptures, introducing completely new expressions that transcend the limits of conventional representations. Thus, visitors can enjoy the excitement of witnessing these experiments and attempts at the forefront of art during this exhibition. Audiences familiar with the previous works of these artists may find even greater enjoyment in the experience. We hope for a high level of interest and attendance from the audience.
