Sunmi Park : Thinking Birds


Stellar Gallery is proud to present "Thinking Birds," an exhibition by artist Sunmi Park, running from August 17 to September 10, 2024. The showcase features over 30 new parrot artworks, including her latest pieces "Baobab Tree and Booby Bird," as well as new additions to her acclaimed "Choir" series.


"Thinking Birds" reflects Sunmi Park's philosophical exploration and contemplation conveyed through the image of parrots. Through these vibrant creatures, she delves into the free use of color and motifs, embedding her works with profound humanistic insights.


In the centerpiece "Choir," the parrots sing in their unique hues, symbolizing freedom and the diversity of opinions. Just as no two shades of pink or yellow are alike in the multitude of colors, the parrots harmonize in a display of pluralism and inclusivity, each expressing its own voice.


The new piece, "Baobab and Bobo Booby Bird," draws inspiration from Park's personal experiences. It encapsulates reflections derived from the story of the baobab tree in "The Little Prince," Professor Hansun Park's "The Place of Humans," and Aristotle's "Poetics." The work metaphorically illustrates the various human conditions and challenges through the survival strategies of the booby bird, highlighting it not just as a character from a fable, but as a strategic entity thriving in harsh environments.


For the past 15 years, Sunmi Park has dedicated herself to woodcut printmaking, before shifting her focus to acrylic painting upon relocating to New York in 2008. Her work is grounded in strong storytelling and employs a pop art-like approach, using diverse techniques and vibrant, lively brushstrokes to bring her art to life. This dynamic use of color and method showcases freedom and diversity, delivering a unique artistic message.


In the urban oasis of Stellar Gallery, these singing parrots invite visitors to experience deep contemplation and philosophical exploration, creating an enriching and thought-provoking encounter.
